They were slaughtered by artillery. Couldn’t even shoot back. Shortly after we had WWII where nations were scared to death of volunteering because of the fresh memory of WWI. We are in a similar naive state that we were in at the beginning of WWI, except it’s not a longing for adventure but a longing for Internet likes.
Those volunteers that had combat experience from Iraq and Afghanistan have said that it didn't prepare them for the amount of firepower the Russian Army was unloading on them. They were fighting a guerrilla war with locals with AK47s a few heavy machine guns, RPGs and mortar fire.
Facing the Russians they were dealing with an army that has air support, artillery support, tank support and APCs with autocannon. The Infantry are using actual combat tactics against them. All of this is coordinated with a modern command and control network.I heard an interview with an American Veteran that is in Ukraine and he says that in just 3 days he fired more rounds that in 3 tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and that the Russian soldiers are not some farmers with 50 years old AK's... At the end he said that if you really want to go there, it's probably a one way trip.
