20 years on, why India denied America's request for troops in Iraq

More than 20 years have passed since the United States invaded Iraq and toppled Saddam Hussein's government.

At the time, President George W Bush's Administration requested India to send troops to Iraq. New Delhi's decision to turn down that request may have one of India's wisest decisions. HT's Shashank Mattoo breaks down why India refused to send troops to Iraq. Mattoo also unpacks the arguments for and against sending troops. He also lays out why that judgement seems to have been borne out by history.

Many won't know that Saddam Hussein was the only middle East leader who supported India on the Kashmir issue and openly criticised Pakistan
