The lead ship, USS Arleigh Burke, was commissioned during Admiral Burke's lifetime. These warships were designed as multimission destroyers, able to fulfill the strategic land strike role with Tomahawk missiles; antiaircraft warfare role with powerful Aegis radar and surface-to-air missiles.
