Ramasamy bins 'dog in manger' report claiming he will be dropped By Martin Vengadesan

Malaysiakini : Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy has rubbished a news report that said he is expected to be dropped as a candidate in the upcoming Penang state polls.

The DAP lawmaker pointed out that the list of potential candidates has not even been submitted to the central leadership. “I want to serve my party for one more term. I have stated this publicly. “I leave it to the party to make the decision,” he told Malaysiakini.   “I believe the chief minister (Chow Kon Yeow) has yet to make any decision,” he added.

Surprised by report

Ramasamy (above) believes he has a good relationship with the federal government and that being vocal does not mean he is against his party’s leadership. The Perai assemblyperson, who is overseas, said he was surprised when The Star reported he was poised for the axe in his state constituency.

The report indicated that Ramasamy will be asked to step down as DAP embarks on a path to inject new blood into its line-up. The 74-year-old has served three terms since his election in 2008. “I don’t understand how and where The Star sourced the information about my impending ‘drop’ from the list of candidates.

“I suppose the MCA-financed publication has nothing better to do other than be a ‘dog in the manger’. “In other words, if MCA is not in the government then others have no place,” said Ramasamy.

According to a report by the Edge, MCA recently upped its stake in the Star Media Group Bhd to 327.46 million shares (45.18 percent) which its investment arm Huaren Holdings largely holds.

Headhunter : Why dump him if he's doing an excellent job, much better than his younger colleagues? He never held back his criticism of the opposition when others prefer to keep quiet.

His loyalty to the party has never been questioned. It would be costly to DAP if they dump him because he's the one who holds the Indian support together.

Steven Ong : We need politicians who dare to expose wrongs even if it touch the nerve of the 'sensitive' people Its for the good of the country that wrong culture and habits are corrected and not kept quiet to maintain the artificial harmony because there are Malaysians who would show their tantrum and disturb the peace when privileges mean to help them for over 60 years are abolished.

FellowMalaysian : I am totally shocked and flabbergasted to hear The Star Publication has reported that Penang DCM II P Ramasamy is expected to be dropped as a candidate in the upcoming state election. There is no other person who has contributed more to Chow Kon Yeow's state government than Ramasamy.

He is extremely people-focussed and he has raised his concerns on many issues especially that concerns the state and also matters related to national issues. Ramasamy was forthright when he recently brought out the issue of public servants being dominated by just one race but, as expected, his call for redress was summarily shot-down by UMNO leaders due to reasons related to political expediency.

There is not a single reason in my mind that Ramasamy should be replaced as he is focussed, articulate and methodical especially on matters concerning the welfare and social status of the people.
