Defamation: Mahfuz wants Sanusi to pay double after deadline lapse

Malaysiakini : Kedah Pakatan Harapan chairperson Mahfuz Omar intends to seek twice the amount of compensation from Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor in relation to a defamation suit following a Court of Appeal order.

Mahfuz was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian that he plans to file a cross-appeal in court to increase the damages from RM120,000 to RM240,000.

This comes after he alleged that Sanusi (above, right) had not settled the claim, although the payment period had been set for 14 days from the day of the judgement on Apr 3.

On Oct 9, 2019, Mahfuz filed a suit against Sanusi over a post uploaded on the latter’s Facebook account which linked Mahfuz to the opening of a Sports Toto gambling outlet in Pokok Sena, Kedah.

LimePanther5220 : In the case of Lim Lip Eng vs an e-commerce company, the High Court said the penalty of RM2 million imposed on LLE was to serve as a deterrent against individuals making unfounded remarks in the future.

LLE is only an MP. Sanusi here is an MB. Being an MB whom people look up to for guidance and direction, isn’t it all the more necessary for Sanusi not to slander and make unfounded remarks?

Why is LLE penalised some 16 times higher than him? Mahfuz should seek increase of the penalty sum to not less than RM2m so that the court is not seen to be unfair.

Determined Sarawakian : Mahfuz is a nice person, even the costs of the defamation suit after double increments is still cheap for a Kedah MB that can afford a Ford Ranger. Sure he range far with defamation payments, or not, since dedak during the uneventful days have only been dripping.

ScallopEatMcD : Good move. Keep on doubling the demand until he bankrupt or shut his filthy mouth. This is the way to treat uncivilized, immoral and hypocrites.
