Malaysiakini : COMMENT | It came to my attention that a supposedly veteran journalist recently slanderously called Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) an "apartheid academy" in an opinion piece published on Malaysiakini.

Andrew Sia was purportedly trying to draw a parallel between a higher education institution and the despicable past apartheid practice in South Africa.

As a veteran journalist, any claim must be backed up by substantive arguments and facts. However, the article is unfortunately written from a biased and emotionally charged perspective. Before refuting his slander, we first need to clearly define what can be considered apartheid.

The term originated from an Afrikaans word that translated to "separating, setting apart". The apartheid system according to Amnesty International is an institutionalised regime of oppression and domination by one racial group over another and it is a serious human rights violation that is prohibited in public international law.

A clear example of the implementation of apartheid is South Africa's apartheid policy and Israel's treatment and policy toward Palestinians where policies are put in place to segregate, oppress, and deny access to some areas solely based on race.

It also serves as a means of domination and systematic oppression by one racial group over another. Was the veteran journalist correct in his application of apartheid on UiTM? Clearly no.

Neutral Point : 90% of the public universities also allocated to BUMI, UiTM also for BUMI. Can the private universities also impose such rules that ONLY for NM? We are all Malaysian and we all pay taxes and why we should have such out dated rules?

12345678 : Institutionalized discrimination is the same whatever name you call it. Being 'enshirened' in the constitution doesn't make it right or fair. It's just means majority won over the minority's voice and wishes.

Apartheid was also enshrined in law. Law of the oppressors. Hitler's action against the Jews were also legal at that time. It was also enshrined in law.

Where does it say that taxpayer funded public universities are for Malays ONLY and must exclude NonMalays? There is a difference between helping Malays and excluding NonMalays.

MS : So Mr Secretary General, you were offended by the word 'apartheid' used to drive home the point about the racist, segregationist underpinnings of UiTM which, ostensibly, was set up solely for the educational upliftment of the bumiputras.

Perhaps you would be happier if the term used by Andrew Sia was "neo-apartheid"... defined as "a spatial and political urban regime of division which (re)produces a deeply flawed and unsustainable urban order, spawning further conflicts and instability".

But let's not quibble over semantics...given that horse manure and bullcrap are really the same despite what you choose to call it. Even if you try to perfume the stench by referring to it as "affirmative action"

And as expected of all Malay politicians weaned on the toxic and deliberately divisive Ketuanan Melayu ideology, you cunningly chose to ignore the one fact which destroys your "Article 153, underprivileged Bumiputra" argument - the fact that about 1600 foreigners who by no calculation may be categorized as bumiputra, have been admitted as students while vehemently denying that same right to non-Malay Malaysians.

On that score alone, this screams segregationist and racist. But given that politicians like you are selectively hard of hearing, you continue to defend the undefendable. And when Mr Secretary General was your last drive through the Shah Alam campus?

If you have not done so recently, do take time to visit the car parks used by students and you'll note how many poor, marginalized, underprivileged Malays drive up everyday in their pimped up Myvis, Proton SUVs, Mercs and such.

In your own damning words, Mr Secretary General, you and the ketuanan crowd you belong to have long rejected "the idea of equity in education where it is important for every segment of society to have equal representation and place in education."

UiTM stands tall as a monument to that despicable inequity and represents the worst excesses of your ketuanan melayu policy and processes.

Open minded 2281 : Asraf Article 153 says to give preference to Malays but not exclude non Malays completely which goes against other Article which is to treat all citizens equally.

No wonder the journalist used apartheid because when you sapu everything based on race and discriminate certain citizens than it is no different to what happened in South Africa. I think politicians should try to unite the country and move on.
