Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has condemned an incident in which a non-Muslim was slapped for eating in public in the daytime during Ramadan.

In a message relayed by his senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, he said such aggressions must be stopped immediately.

"What is the use of us discussing Islam and its beauty, especially during Ramadan, if it does not build inner strength, distances us from anger and threatens peace and order," Nashrul said during a briefing by the Prime Minister's Office today.

Anwar's comments came not long after the 65-year-old accused of slapping the non-Muslim youth in Johor on Sunday was hauled to the Johor Bahru Magistrate’s Court.

Abdul Razak Ismail initially pleaded guilty but contested the facts stated in the charge against him.

At first, he was told to enter his defence but was then given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) after the court was informed that the prosecution was instructed to refer the case to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC).

It is unclear why the case is being put on hold.

Vijay47 : By now, this news item would have been read by thousands and come to know of by other means by thousands more. Would a single one of them, Muslim or non-Muslim, be shocked by this case of “religious assault” by, of all persons, a senior citizen?

No, not a one. On the contrary, all would be surprised that this did not occur earlier, it was a disaster almost dying to explode. And no surprise, there is no protest from Muslim leaders against this further shame to their own religion.

But I must add that DAP’s Syerleena Abdul Rashid has issued a firm, pained statement; perhaps Zaid Ibrahim and the other two gentlemen whose names slip my mind may have similar anguish to express. When would Muslim leaders be outraged? But what about the Top Three responsible for such criminal acts?

Is it below the standing of the prime minister, the Home Affairs minister, and the IGP to offer some assuring announcement to the country? Perhaps we cannot expect this from Anwar Ibrahim since it does not involve Hamas and Gaza or his efforts to boost Jakim even higher. The Home Minister? We can forget about him. How about that policeman?

Maybe he is too busy trying to locate Indira Gandhi’s daughter who he has admitted he still cannot trace after all these years. Of course, nothing has been done about Zamri Vinoth either despite a thousand police reports. Anwar Ibrahim, there is no way you can claim we are not heading into dangerous waters, every day the bell tolls nearer and louder, and your inaction against Muslim fanaticism can be said to be the cause.

Or would you be awakened only when mad men take to open violence in the streets? Stop your pathetic concern with Palestine and other similar issues. Start being a genuine leader right now, at least for the remaining months of your term. What would it serve you if your continued silence leads to a burning nation?
