What makes you ashamed to be Malaysian? By Commander S THAYAPARAN (Retired) Royal Malaysian Navy

Malaysiakini : “Every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under.”

- HL Mencken

COMMENT | “Truly, today I feel ashamed to be called a ‘Malaysian’,” said academic Tajuddin Rasdi.

The most interesting thing in Tajuddin’s public statements about this flag fiasco, as reported in the press, is this - “Tajuddin said he even disagreed with the daily’s decision to suspend the editors for inadvertently publishing an image of the Jalur Gemilang without the crescent moon symbol”.

The owners of Sin Chew essentially threw their employees under the bus and reinforced certain narratives of the state by doing so, damaging not only their credibility but also the fragile limits of a free press in this country. Honestly, I find this kind of behaviour shameful. Which brings me to the real issue when someone says he or she is ashamed to be a citizen of a country.

VioletQuokka1493 : The shame comes from PMX pushing for double standards with his Ketuanan Islam/malay policies. Does he really believe he can force feed these bitter pills down the throats of the non Muslims/malays?

You can see the resistance building up and even Malays don’t want it. Today it is passive objections. Tomorrow it may deteriorate into something else. So be wary. Don’t take our peace and security for granted with the Ketuanan policies.

BluePanther4725 : The racist politicians and religious authorities in this country are not ashamed of corruption, racism, religious extremism and injustice. They proudly embrace and indulge in them. They certainly have no shame at all.

OCT : It is very clear that the politicians and religious authorities don't understand the meaning of shame. They shame themselves without knowing it.

Malaysia image, integrity and reputation has gone to the dump when the biggest kleptocrate in 1MDB case has been classified as the biggest scandal in the world and the Govt has the cheek to reduce his sentence and fines. 1MDB is the longest court case in the world unresolved as it is never ending.

The recent incident of incorrect Malaysia flag gaff has caused a huge hue and cry by concluding it is unpatriotic. However, the flying of a foreign flag by students and 2R citizens is acceptable. This is wrong concept. Flying and displaying a foreign flag is tantamount to unpatriotic too.

Incorrect Malaysia flag is deemed disrespect but flying a foreign flag means disloyalty and showing allegiance to another country. So why is it that the Govt condemn those who fly a foreign flag. When it comes to China flag, the answer is yes but when it comes to Palestinian flag, it is acceptable. What a twisted stand by the Govt!!!
