Based on their lineage, the Ranger Corps is older than the Royal Malay Regiment.
The Royal Ranger Regiment traces its origins back to the 19th-century Sarawak Rangers, while the Royal Malay Regiment was established in the 20th century.
Ranger Corps lineage
- Sarawak Rangers: The Royal Ranger Regiment's history begins with the formation of the paramilitary Sarawak Rangers in 1863. This was a peacekeeping force in the Sarawak region.
- Malayan Emergency: The name was revived in 1941 as a British colonial unit. Later, during the Malayan Emergency, Iban trackers were organized into a regimental formation as the Sarawak Rangers in 1953.
- Modern Regiment: Following the formation of Malaysia in 1963, the unit was transferred to the new Malaysian Army and expanded into a multi-battalion regiment.
