In the Muslim world, Sunnis and Shia waged ruthless campaigns against each other in similar genocidal campaigns across Africa and Asia.

The SAUDI solution to radical Islam, was more Islam. We forget so quickly. We are unable to think critically and are no longer taught history and therefore repeat it over and over. Approximately 2013. 

I read an excellent book about this major event in the Arab world which was largely ignored in the USA in 79-80. It went into excellent detail, even explaining how the French SF men were “temporarily converted to Muslims” and more. I believe the author was Yaroslav Trofimov, but I could be wrong. 

But the advent of modern terrorism added a new dimension. In essence, no targets, civilian or holy places were off limits. But on Nov. 20, 1979, a well-organized group of Islamic terrorists attacked the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, killing and wounding hundreds of worshippers and taking hostages becoming a bloody two-week stand-off.
