India is no stranger to Jewish community. First Jews arrived in Kochi, 2,000 years ago and settled across Kerala. They assimilated with Indian culture. Today, approx. 5,000 Jews live across India, while most moved to Israel. Homeland tracks journey of Jews in India.
Me & my wife are Israeli Jews. My wife’s family fled from Iraq to India and her mother was born in India. Today the whole family lives in Israel but the cultural connection to India is strong. We travel to India, cook Indian food and have a warm place in our heart to India. A country that literally saved my wife’s family.
As a proud Jew thank you posting this. My Mum and Dad are Jews born in Calcutta or Kolkata as it's known today. My Mum's family moved from Baghdad at the end of the 19th century. She always said that there was no antisemitism in India. I made sure that I was able to visit India with my parents and made the trip in 2007.
Amazing! Now I know why India have strong relation with Israel because they live in peace and solidarity with Indian people.I went mainly to see where and how my parents lived, the schools they went to and of course the Synagogues. I spent the week in Kolkata and week in Mumbai also. My grandmother was a Dutch Orthodox Jew. She told me she used to spend summers in Dutch Suriname with her Jewish family from India. I never doubted she had Indian family. This is the first I have heard of Indian Jews other than my Grandma telling of her family there.
