‘No One Trusts Them Anymore’ - Is The BBC Losing An Entire Generation?

The BBC risks losing young audiences because it fails to connect with how they actually use social media and consume content. Its awkward attempts to engage online, such as misusing internet slang and producing out-of-touch digital projects, highlight a wider problem of not understanding internet culture.

Despite a few successful shows like My Mate’s a Bad Date and Brexitcast’s collaboration with The Receipts Podcast, most BBC content still sits on outdated platforms rather than where young people actually are, such as TikTok and YouTube. Even when younger BBC journalists create popular online content, their efforts go unnoticed by senior management.

The cancellation of youth-friendly programmes like Victoria Derbyshire further shows that reaching younger audiences is not a priority. Unless the BBC modernises its approach and embraces the platforms and styles young people engage with, it risks becoming irrelevant to a new generation.
