Apparently, Only Islam Can Save Us All

Malaysia's Chief Minister of Kedah, Sanusi Mat Nor, has declared that only Islam can save the world from cruelty and oppression. In a Facebook post that garnered 26,000 likes, the PAS politician proclaimed that everything except his religion is broken and exposes humanity to suffering.

He insists that politics and religion cannot be separated, and that PAS must continue its fight to take over the country's political system under all circumstances.

While claiming that an Islamic government doesn't oppress anyone, is fair, doesn't discriminate, and doesn't deny anyone's rights, his grand declarations raise fundamental questions about religious supremacism in a supposedly multiracial and multireligious nation.

The contradictions are striking. If PAS and its Islamic governance model is truly the answer to Malaysia's problems, why do states under their control like Kedah and Kelantan continue to struggle with drugs, poverty, and social issues? Why do these regions consistently underperform economically while their leaders obsess over religious dominance instead of actual governance?

The reality is that this race and religion rhetoric keeps Malaysia perpetually second-class on the global stage, unable to compete with neighbors like Singapore who focus on meritocracy and development rather than sectarian positioning. Even more telling, the comments on Sanusi's own Facebook post show many Muslims calling out PAS as a party that exploits religion for political gain rather than genuinely representing Islamic values.

The core issue isn't religion itself, but the arrogant insistence that one group's values must be everyone's values. Why should anyone accept being relegated to a lower class position in their own country just so others can feel religiously dominant?

Malaysia's strength has always been its diversity, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak, yet PAS-style politics demands conformity and threatens those who question with labels like "liberal" or "sasat."

The irony is profound: these politicians tell their followers not to love the world too much while simultaneously grasping for worldly power, unable to save even their own constituencies yet claiming they can save all of humanity.

Perhaps it's time to remember the principle of lakum dinukum waliya din and stop trying to impose one group's beliefs on everyone else.
