Ambush at Kota Lama, 1876 - The Final Battles of the Perak War

Sabri Zain : After the capture of Pasir Salak on November 15th, 1875, the conflict in Perak had crossed a decisive line. What began as a British search for the assassins of Resident J.W.W. Birch had become a full-scale military occupation of the state.

Two British columns advanced from opposite ends of Perak, resistance appeared to be collapsing and victory for the British seemed inevitable. Then, at a small riverside village on the Perak River called Kota Lama, everything went wrong.

This video tells the story of the ambush at Kota Lama and the brutal campaign that followed: summary executions, close-quarters fighting, jungle ambushes, and the systematic destruction of villages along the river. It was here, in the final months of the war, that armed Malay resistance was finally broken - and with it, the last meaningful independence of Perak’s traditional hierarchy.

Drawing on contemporary military reports, eyewitness accounts, and later colonial reflections, this video explores not only what happened at Kota Lama, but why it mattered. The irony is stark: the assassination of Birch, intended to expel British authority, ultimately gave the British mastery over Perak that diplomacy alone had never achieved.

This video marks the final chapter in my series of videos marking the 150th Anniversary of the the Perak War which I released on November 7th last year.

If you’ve followed the series so far, thank you for coming this far with me.
