When words of gratitude turn into religious tripwire By Mariam Mokhtar

Malaysiakini : COMMENT | If hearing a non-Muslim say “Alhamdulillah” will mislead Muslims, and to imply that the speaker should then convert, Malaysia would be drowning in a bureaucratic nightmare, all caused by ordinary words.

In Parliament, PAS’ Rantau Panjang MP Siti Zailah Yusoff warned that Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming’s use of phrases such as "Alhamdulillah" and "sujud syukur" (prostration of gratitude) could “confuse” Muslims and that he was “toying” with Islam.

She demanded directly: “Are you a believer?”, thus turning Nga's ministerial speech on public housing into a theological interrogation.

The real danger isn’t Nga saying “Alhamdulillah”. The real danger is thinking Muslims are so fragile that hearing it from a non-Muslim could mislead them.

Just Common Sense : Muslims in this country go through a lifetime of indoctination from cradle all the way up to death and if their Faith can be shaken just by a nM saying Arabic phrases there is something seriously wrong with the belief system.

And why does this only happen to Muslims? We do not hear about Hindus. Buddhists, Christians and others getting confused by non believers.

Sealthedeal : Because they are insecure. Made to feel insecure so they can be controlled.

Fair minded Senior Citizen : What an insecure set of people. Fight for your belief without crutches of vagueness and unparalleled support from poor doctrine pallbearers.

And Jakim among others must be your Champion - pity money and resources can’t be diverted for more practical reasons.

The writer MM has the guts and brains to be a good example for religious insecurity and constant whimpering of ‘we are under siege’. Grow up guys and don’t be afraid of your own shadow.

apanama is back : With billions and billions spent on JAKIM every year for decades, in 2026, just hearing a non-Muslim utter "Alhamdulillah" will mislead a Muslim to question their faith.

So, all those billions should be going down the drain. If that is the case, can we close down JAKIM for its failure to educate the Muslims that when they hear a non-Muslim saying "Alhamdulillah," they are not supposed to be misled to question their faith?

While the non-Muslims are the biggest taxpayers supporting the budget to JAKIM, the non-Muslims are to be blamed for uttering the word "Alhamdulillah," which may confuse the Muslims. Only in Malaysia do we have this kind of joke and wastage of taxpayers' money.
