Subhas Bose was not a Japanese puppet.. It was not like he did not get any support from Indians. It was just that British censorship in India was so Strong and strict that Indiany did not have any Idea that Bose was building an army for India's liberation. 

Then Brits made a mistake by publicly trying the pows of INA.  And publicizing their victory. It resulted in a naval mutiny in 1946 and a general mutiny was about to breakout in the armed forces by July 1947 (as was the view of the then commander in chief of British Indian Army).

They, the Brits hastily withdrew from India (pre-poning their exit from July 1948 to August 1947)
