| Briefing my boys before the move to Mogadishu from Baidoa, Lt Hamuddin Tarinchang of Sabah was the platoon commander, of this group, he is beside me. |
This is not a routine autobiography dressed up in military uniform. Nor is it the sort of sanitized memoir that carefully trims away anything awkward, contentious or politically inconvenient.

That is both the book’s strength and its provocation. Swami is not interested in presenting a neat career narrative of postings, promotions and ceremonial milestones. His story is about the pressures, contradictions and human costs that lie beneath the official surface of military life. He writes from experience rather than institutional comfort, and his account carries the unmistakable force of someone who has little patience for euphemism.
There is nothing particularly “politically correct” about the voice. Swami does not appear intent on making every experience palatable to every reader. He challenges, complains, remembers, interprets and sometimes rages. That rawness gives the narrative its pulse, even when the passion threatens to outrun detached reflection.
And that is precisely why Exigent Circumstances deserves to be read as more than another soldier’s autobiography. It is a personal account that refuses to salute the official version of events merely because it is official. Swami writes not to polish the past, but to confront it—passionately, personally and without much interest in making the reader comfortable.
