The lies that have been told about Israel, particularly over the past 15 years, have lead directly to the virulent anti-Semitism now openly manifest in the UK. When the likes of Ken Livingstone equate Zionism with Nazism, Jews suffer. The trouble is, people like him have been at it for years and have remained largely unchallenged - except by brave souls like Melanie Phillips.
I would also point out that we now have Islamist MP's, openly selected by mainstream political parties. This anti-Western viewpoint is now rife across the political spectrum, even the Tory Party is not immune. You only have to watch the contributions of MP's to parliamentary debates on Israel to appreciate the insidious influence of anti-Israel, anti-American attitudes.
I actually think, and I suspect that Melanie would agree, that our modern, pluralistic society could soon face an existential crisis. I am not at all confident that modernity will prevail. There can be no accommodation with anti-Semitism, yet the Labour Party has elected, by landslide, a leader who has declared Hamas to be his "friends".
This is the same Labour Party, who, a generation earlier, elected Tony Blair - that is how much times have changed over the past 20 years.
The late Christopher Hitchens said that anti-Semitism is the unfailing sign of a disordered mind. The problem is that many "anti-Zionists" cannot appreciate that they are motivated by anti-Semitism. They simply refuse to see it.
