The bigger challenge is internal. The scandal has exposed weaknesses administrators long acknowledged in private: fragmented verification systems, oversight that relies on informal checks rather than structured compliance.
In modern sport, gaps like these invite trouble. Strong associations maintain centralised authentication units, digital audit trails, and clear records of who reviewed each document and when.
Without that structure, errors and misconduct become harder to detect. Malaysia’s system did not meet that standard.
Reform will require more than promises: independent audits, transparent reporting, and responsibility for decisions made inside FAM.
Only then can Malaysian football rebuild the credibility it has lost.
