Dear Government,

You want to do a lockdown or a movement control operation you do this first. For the poor, for the part time workers, for the students, for all those who have to head back to their kampongs because they don’t have jobs any more you do this first. For those who don’t have a home of their own and now they are jobless can’t pay their rent or utilities - you do this first.

You get an electronic system up and running so that thousands of people don’t have to line up outside police stations creating the kind of crowds that heighten the risk of contagion. You work with the police and the army and everyone in government including those you are too embarrassed to see and you work out a plan across all sectors including transport and security services and communication.

You pledge free electricity and water and internet and you create food subsidies for the poor so that they can afford quarantine. You communicate quickly, calmly and wisely so people don’t panic. Communicate that they will not be left in the lurch. Then don’t leave them in the lurch. Communicate why these measures are being taken. So people understand what they are being asked to do. Communicate the severity of the problem. Then maybe you can control movement.

You do this all first. You don’t play golf. You don’t take selfies. You don’t pledge a paltry 20k from your golf tournament, take a photo and get to be pleased with yourself. You don’t announce a half baked plan. Your actions are truly criminal. I told myself I wasn’t going to get angry but your actions have put millions of people at risk. You asked to be given a chance but you’ve proved yourself unworthy. But we are stuck with you and you with us.

So now step up. Do your job. You wanted it so badly, here’s your chance. Show us why you thought you were the man for the job.
