| The Marginalized Non Malays Of Malaysia, My Father In Law, Corporal Choo Woh Hup |
I got a response from another marginalized Non Malay in response to my article. Army holding campaign in schools to attract non-bumi recruits - Yeah to bullshit the Non Muslim Bumis and the Non Malays (Edited and Republished)
I will NOT publish his name.
Dear Sir,
I am 63 years old and came across this link - Seventh Rangers – in one of my Groups on WhatsApp. I could not stop reading it, although I felt so sad with the state of affairs. Please don’t let my title of Captain mislead you – I was a merchant ship captain.
I was selected to join RMC after my LCE (as it was called then) but chickened out as none of my friends were going. My father (ex-Indian army) was very disappointed. I always wanted to be an airline pilot but when I was never selected after 8 times of applying to MAS (for the same reasons you mentioned – Bumiputra), I tried the Air Force.
I wish you all the best. I would like to buy you a beer some day! God bless!Unfortunately (or fortunately) I didn’t get through the physical interview. I am embarrassed to say, that although I am close to 6’ tall, I didn’t have the strength to do all those rope climbing ☹ (I was never a sports man)
I started working as a bank clerk and after a year, I had the opportunity to join as a cadet with MISC. I was already 21 years old. The oldest in the batch. I had to go direct to sea instead of ALAM as I was 21 – which turned out for the better. I finished my sea time fast and qualified for the exams before anybody else from my batch.
The good thing about the sea training is that one must pass the exams before being promoted. And as I sailed on the tankers, I accrued my sea time fast, passed my exams and got my promotions quickly. (Tanker work was hard and the bumiputras shied away from that) I got my captain’s licence in 9 years, compared to the usual 10 to 12 years. Hence, I feel, after reading your article, I was fortunate not to get into the army.
Sir, the reason for writing to you, is not to boast of my achievements but I felt compelled to thank you for what you have done for the country. And I must comment on your writing skills. I could feel some of the disappointments you were writing; but not the experience when you shielded your body to protect your CO. Nobody can experience that but you!
You must have been a smart soldier! To be selected and commissioned to be an officer from a recruit. Believe me, you have accomplished a lot and can be proud of your life! I had 2 cousins (much your juniors) in the air force. One passed on in a helicopter crash after retiring, and the other has also retired and working in the private sector but not to his full potential.
Thank you for writing that article and the others that I have read at you blog. You are an eye opener to many but not to the government!
Best Wishes
