'Less European, more M'sian': PN MP moots Tugu Negara renovation

Malaysiakini : PARLIAMENT | An opposition lawmaker today suggested Putrajaya renovate the iconic Tugu Negara to better reflect local soldiers who fought for the country's independence. Kalam Salan (PN-Sabak Bernam) argued the existing monument - which was launched in 1966 - features a bronze statue of soldiers that look like Europeans.

This, Kalam (above) said, was akin to idolising those who colonised the country rather than those who died fighting for its freedom. "It is a symbol of our country’s independence. If we look there, the statue holding the flag represents our national heroes - a symbol. ADS 

"But if you look at their faces, their sharp noses look more like Europeans. Why not change them to have shorter noses, like Asians, like Malaysians? "Our faces... our noses aren’t that sharp, like mine, right? It is as if we are glorifying European fighters - the ones who colonised us.

Veteran 1972 : Please sort out the streamlining of pensions for the Veterans who left the service before 2013! Instead of throwing away money on something that is in perfect condition. 

It was reconstructed when the CPM blew it up in 1975, the features were designed to have Asiatic features by MARA students.

Mazhilamani : Speak about something that will lift the spirit of our people in the country, or refreshing ideas to eradicate corruption , immorality and addiction, progressive improvement to our education system, create that nature of environment to draw investment and development for the country. 

Kalam Salam, please act with maturity. A generation ago a particular race was noted for its flat nose, but look at them today, the have sharp noses. People visit the Tugu Negara to pay homage to our heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country. 

It is strange someone pays close attention to noses. Does this man know that many Australians, English, Sikhs, Chinese and Indians died fighting the communists. Why should everything be built around racism.

Deepthink : Maybe must ask Prof. Solehah. These 'white men may be descendants of Hang Tuah who was a descentant from Alrxander the Great and that what makes them a bit nosey Europeans. 

Or I think maybe we ask FAM. These soldiers may have their grandmas who were Malays (and nationalized) who were descentants of the Roman Empire which was frequently visited by our seafaring Malay community with their vast war ships which would fly over the continents in matter of minutes.

Vote4changejohor : This MP is perceived to be lacking substance debating about renovate the Tugu Negara.. 

Why waste so much time and money trying to improve the appearance of the Tugu when you should be debating on the wider and pertinent topic of how to improve and uplift the livelihood and social economic lives and status of the freedom fighters and their present descendants, i.e. the present military staff and forces who has tirelessly safeguarding the sovereignty and security of our nation.. 

Please give more ideas and plans on how to honour them by improving their llives and livelihood.. Many citizens are disappointed with narrow minded M.Ps !!
